AFC Warszawa - May
A word from the manager
April was a tough month for The Knaves. During the first game against UKS Kamionek, we found ourselves two-nil down inside the first quarter of an hour. Some sloppy play and some defensive mistakes let us down, but a goal from our new Italian forward, Alberto Pini, got us back into the game before half-time. The boys then showed great resilience in the second half to complete the comeback and win 3-2, but it was the start of a disappointing run for us in terms of results. A couple of (dubious!?) penalties and defensive lapses against Victoria and Agape II Bialoleka caused us to drop points in back-to-back games for the second time this season. That means that promotion is now out of our hands, but with a lot of football to play, the race is not over!
It has also been a good time to take stock and remember what AFC’s long-term goals are - to be better and stronger as a club every few months, and we’re well on course to keep that up. Work is going on behind the scenes regarding some summer changes to the structure of the club, and we’re convinced that come August, the club will once again be in a much stronger position whether we’re playing in Klasa A or Klasa B. We’ll hopefully bring you news of that in June!

Igor Wolański
AFC Warszawa were rocked in April with the news that goalkeeper Igor Wolański was told by doctors to retire from football due to an on-going back issue. Not only is this sad news for the club but devastating for Igor who at the age of 21 has to give up playing the sport he loves.
Igor joined AFC in 2023 after playing for Klasa B rivals KP Marymont. Upon joining he was the third choice goalkeeper but his great attitude, willingness to learn and overall integration into the squad saw him in 2026 become the first choice goalkeeper.
At such a young age to join an international squad showed what character he has. Since stopping playing Igor has shown eagerness to stay at AFC in a support and coaching role which is very much appreciated by everyone connected with the club. Although he will miss being on the pitch we hope he can stay involved and we’ll be supporting him in any future plans.

With no game over the Easter weekend it was back to Hutnik for a ‘home’ match against fellow promotion rivals UKS Kamionek. With quite a few regulars of the starting line-up absent for various reasons manager Neil Riley was forced into making changes and also began with a 3-5-2 formation. In came Youssef Khalid to the starting XI as did Emre Colakoglu, Albero Pini and Franek Masny. There was also a start in goal for Tarn Willers after the terrible news that Igor Wolański can no longer carry on playing due to a persistent back issue.
The changes seemed to disrupt AFC’s play in the early exchanges with Kamionek having the better of the play and scoring twice within the first fifteen minutes. The first goal came via a deflected shot which beat Willers and went in off a post. The second came shortly after as a break down the right saw the ball reach the penalty area where it wasn’t cleared effectively and was finally hammered into the net from close range. A third goal looked imminent and AFC had a let off as striker Sieradzki failed to hit the target after breaking the defensive line and dribbling round Willers.
After 26 minutes of a pulsating first half Pini was brilliantly played in by Masny who calmly rolled the ball into the net. It was a much needed goal for AFC who headed into the changing rooms at half time only one goal behind.
Riley made just the one change at half time with Andrea Tolusso replacing Khalid and The Knaves reverting to a 4-2-3-1 formation. This seemed to stem the opposition’s attacks as AFC took control. Patrick Tanner equalised from close range on 56 minutes.
After 74 minutes Artur Wojtas who had opened the scoring in the 12th minute received two yellow cards within the space of 3 minutes and was duly sent off. With AFC well in the ascendancy with 11 minutes remaining captain Corentin Razes bundled the ball in following a set-piece to give AFC the lead for the first time in the match. A few long free kicks and throw-ins were then launched into the AFC penalty area in the final minutes but The Knaves stayed disciplined to hold on for the three points.

After last week’s thrilling comeback against Kamionek ‘The Knaves’ were hoping to build on that performance to stay above the chasing pack in the race for promotion. However, it was a frustrating afternoon for AFC who despite having the majority of possession and looking the more dangerous team had to settle for a point.
With Alessandro Puerini, Hugo Molina and Simon Real available they came back into the side with Franciszek Masny and Youssef Khlaid making way. Absentees this week were Sacha Beubry-Niejinsky and Bartek Danilczuk. Andrea Tolusso also made the starting XI as manager Neil Riley decided to start with a four man defence.
The first half settled down quite quickly and the game was primarily played in the Victoria half. With the hosts dropping deep there was little space to create clear-cut chances and although a few crosses caused some concern for the Victoria defence some crucial blocks and a lack of clinical finishing ensured the half ended goalless.
After the interval AFC upped the intensity and on 47 minutes a fine cross from Pini on the right hand side found Clement Sauvard unmarked at the back post to steer a cushioned volley back across the goalkeeper and into the net. AFC kept up the attacking intent in search of the second goal and Pini blazed over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat. Not long after the sucker-punch was landed. In the 63rd minute a rare break by Victoria saw goalkeeper Tarn Willers impede the onrushing striker and the penalty was awarded. The resulting kick saw the ball calmly stroked into the goal and the scores were back level.
Although AFC continued to probe and press a second goal was not coming and as the game wore on it became more open with Willers making two fine saves to deny Victoria a second goal. Noah Delophont, Robert Knales, Marco Cara and Masny were all brought on to try and help find a winner but after 90 minutes there was no change in the score.

Our last match in April was a home game against fellow promotion chasers Agape II Bialoleka. With Hutnik unavailable, we had to change location to our ‘second’ home pitch in Bemowo for an afternoon kick-off in the sun.
Although maybe not so obvious on camera, the wind was very strong, blowing from left-to-right and meaning no goal-kicks were going long, and speculative shots from outside the box needed to be watched carefully! Kicking into the wind in the first half, AFC had the better of the openings. A couple of longer-range efforts came close to beating the Agape goalkeeper, and one or two other half chances didn’t quite fall for us. Going in half-time with the scores at nil-nil favoured us though, and we knew that given the conditions, we could get on top in the second half.
We continued to press well at times, and again a few openings and half-chances failed to give us the lead. Despite being on top in a fairly tight game, AFC could not find the breakthrough, and a second yellow card on 75’ for Alberto Pini meant we were up against it. Alberto was a touch unlucky - his first yellow card was supposed to be for Alessandro Puerini, but the referee showed he doesn’t know his Italians from his Italians, and booked the wrong player.
On 83’ Agape took the lead from a corner. A deep delivery from the right was well met six yards out. The ball hit the underside of the bar and was judged to have crossed the line before another Agape player bundled it home to make doubly sure. The Knaves were losing 1-0, down to ten men, and with less than 10’ to go.
Not a team to roll over easily though, we got ourselves level on 90’, a break down the right and a good cross from the Polish flyer Piotr Polec was controlled and expertly finished by Puerini. 1-1, and AFC fancied all three points.
For six of the seven minutes of add time, we looked like the team most likely to nick the winner, but a counter attack, a ball in behind, and a penalty for Agape saw not just three points, but one point slip away as seventeen year old A. Reslinski kept his nerve for the visitors to snatch the win.
A disappointing end to a frustrating day - onwards and upwards though, with some must-win games to come in May.

Although maybe not so obvious on camera, the wind was very strong, blowing from left-to-right and meaning no goal-kicks were going long, and speculative shots from outside the box needed to be watched carefully! Kicking into the wind in the first half, AFC had the better of the openings. A couple of longer-range efforts came close to beating the Agape goalkeeper, and one or two other half chances didn’t quite fall for us. Going in half-time with the scores at nil-nil favoured us though, and we knew that given the conditions, we could get on top in the second half.
We continued to press well at times, and again a few openings and half-chances failed to give us the lead. Despite being on top in a fairly tight game, AFC could not find the breakthrough, and a second yellow card on 75’ for Alberto Pini meant we were up against it. Alberto was a touch unlucky - his first yellow card was supposed to be for Alessandro Puerini, but the referee showed he doesn’t know his Italians from his Italians, and booked the wrong player.
On 83’ Agape took the lead from a corner. A deep delivery from the right was well met six yards out. The ball hit the underside of the bar and was judged to have crossed the line before another Agape player bundled it home to make doubly sure. The Knaves were losing 1-0, down to ten men, and with less than 10’ to go.
Not a team to roll over easily though, we got ourselves level on 90’, a break down the right and a good cross from the Polish flyer Piotr Polec was controlled and expertly finished by Puerini. 1-1, and AFC fancied all three points.
For six of the seven minutes of add time, we looked like the team most likely to nick the winner, but a counter attack, a ball in behind, and a penalty for Agape saw not just three points, but one point slip away as seventeen year old A. Reslinski kept his nerve for the visitors to snatch the win.
A disappointing end to a frustrating day - onwards and upwards though, with some must-win games to come in May.

Roma's biggest legend, something of a mythical figure now. What he did was incomprehensible, up there with the all time greats ever. His loyalty should never overshadow his actual quality.
